How to Calculate Overtime Pay

Overtime pay is the extra amount you earn for hours beyond a threshold (often 40 per week). Many employers pay 1.5× or 2× for those hours. This article explains how to calculate overtime pay and links to our overtime pay calculator.

How the Calculation Works

Overtime pay = hourly rate × overtime hours × multiplier. Common: 1.5× (time-and-a-half) or 2× (double time). Example: $24/hour × 8 overtime hours × 1.5 = $288. Add this to your regular pay. Rules vary by location; check your contract and local labor laws.
