How to use this calculator
- Enter the wattage of the appliance.
- Enter how many hours you use it per day.
- Enter the number of days per month.
- Enter your electricity rate (cost per kWh).
How it works
The Electricity Cost Calculator estimates how much an appliance costs to run each month. Use it to find energy hogs, compare appliances, or estimate your power bill.
How the calculation works
Monthly cost = (watts ÷ 1000) × hours per day × days per month × rate per kWh. For example, a 1,000W heater used 8 hours/day for 30 days at $0.12/kWh: (1000/1000) × 8 × 30 × 0.12 = $28.80/month.
Step-by-step
1. Find the wattage on the appliance label (e.g. 1000W). 2. Estimate how many hours per day you use it. 3. Enter days per month (typically 30). 4. Enter your electricity rate per kWh (check your bill).
Common appliance wattages
- LED bulb: 10W - Laptop: 50W - Refrigerator: 150W - Window AC: 1,000W - Space heater: 1,500W - Electric oven: 2,500W
Check your utility bill for the rate per kWh. In the US, the average is about $0.12-0.16/kWh but varies by state.
A kilowatt-hour is 1,000 watts used for one hour. A 100W bulb running for 10 hours uses 1 kWh.
Use energy-efficient appliances (LED, Energy Star), reduce usage hours, and compare rates. This calculator helps identify which appliances cost the most.
