Triangle Area Calculator – Base and Height Formula
A triangle area calculator finds the area from the base and the perpendicular height. The formula is ½ × base × height. This article explains the formula and links to our triangle calculator.
Quick Answer
| Label | Value |
|---|---|
| Base | 10 |
| Height | 8 |
| Area | 40 |
How It Works
Area = ½ × base × height. The height must be perpendicular to the base. For base 10 and height 8: 0.5 × 10 × 8 = 40. Works for any triangle when you use the base and the height to that base.
Additional Notes
If you have sides but not height, you need Heron's formula or trigonometry; our calculator uses base and height only.

Multiply base by the perpendicular height, then divide by 2.
The height must be perpendicular to the base. It can be outside the triangle for obtuse triangles.
Use the same units for base and height; area will be in those units squared.
